Dinner In My Dreams

I like the story Dinner In My Dreams because it gives a good message of how much family members miss their deceased relavtives. It speaks to me because it reminds me how much I miss my grandfather, and all of the great times together. As the women in the story longs to meet her Father in the streets of Rome, it makes me realize how precious time is on earth.

Short Story

As the waves grew taller and taller in the distance the crewmates knew that something had to be done or else the boat and their livelihoods were not going to make it back to the shore. As the lighting transcended across the sky and the thunder belted echoes, fear struck on the face of the crew members. Captain Fredric stood on the beam connected to the sail staring over everyone on the ship and yelled with force, “boys we’ve made it this far and were not going to quit once things look a tad bit hard. I know we are inching closer and closer to the storm and the waves are not subsiding, so all we can do is brace for impact and sail ahead”. The looks on the crew’s faces were not what the captain was hoping for. The light and spark in all of their eyes was gone and defeat was written across each and every one of their faces. One of the crew members yelled out, “Our small boat has no chance against the massive waves, and if we have any chance left our best bet is to turn around and head home!” The crew members all unified in agreement and started running towards their stations of duties to turn the boat around before landing right in the eye of the storm. The captain got to the very highest point of the ship where each and every one of the crew members could see and hear him. He started speaking in not inspirational voice like before but in an constant scream and said, “When I informed you that we were not quitting, that’s what I meant! We are going to sail through that storm and we are going to come out on the other side unified as one and stronger than ever! Now everyone get away from their stations and take cover as we stride through this storm!” Everyone looked shocked, terrified, and a little bit of insanity had covered their faces like they had seen a ghost, though having to follow their captains orders they started making their way for cover. Their thought process was thinking that they were damned if they do and damned if they don't. As everyone took cover the captain made his way into a small compartment under the sails and sat there waiting for the worst. The sound of the thunder and glimpse of lighting was inching closer and closer to the boat and everyone closed their eyes hoping for the best.

Cathedral

I chose the short story Cathedral because I wanted to read an uplifting story. I liked how the narrator started out with no social skills and was very upset that Robert (narrators wives old friend), then changed and grew as a person at the ending of the story. I like how Robert stayed patient with the narrator, and helped him adapt and have an empiphany at the end of the story. I like the overall message of this story; one may have physical "sight", but one may be able to truly see someone on an overall emotional basis even with blindness.

Eyes of a Blue Dog

I chose this picture because in the short story Eyes of a Blue Dog the characters "long" for eachother but they never really get to meet because it is all in the narrators dream. The women in the story feels that someone is revealing her secrets by dreaming about the room. Not only is the word dog in the title but I think a dog is something that a person can reveal their deepest secrets to and I feel if one is ever lonely a dog can be the best answer for their longings. Plus, I really like these pictures of my puppy!

To Be a Rhinoceros Or To Be like Berenger?

Sadly, there have been many times that I have been a rhinoceros. I have conformed with the group, thus, not being true to who I am completley. Sometimes when people have a viewpoint on important matters in life and they make a good arguement for their beliefs I will go along with what they think instead of actually thinking for myself. Though, I think there are alot of times I am like Berenger. If one of my friends is in need of something or is being left out in our group of friends I think I will stand up for them if I think that it is right, no matter what anyone thinks about the matter.

Lyrical Poetry

I chose the song Over You for how it makes you think of the true meanings of the song. The song is filled with irony and symbolism. The words, "But you went away, How dare you? I miss you. They say I'll be okay, But I'm not going to ever get over you", make you think she is talking about someone who voluntarily left her, but actually is irony by how the song reveals its true identity. "Weather man said it's gonna snow, By now I should be used to the cold", makes you think she is talking about the physical weather, but in this case she is talking about how her heart is cold and empty with her love dying.This song is not a song about a basic heartbreak, but rather true loss and longing to be reunited with somone she never will again.

Weather man said it's gonna snow,By now I should be used to the cold.Mid-February shouldn't be so scary.It was only December,I still remember the presents,the tree, you and me.
But you went away,How dare you?I miss you.They say I'll be okay,But I'm not going to ever get over you.
Living alone, here in this place,I think of you and I'm not afraid.Your favorite records make me feel better,Cause you sing along with every song.I know you didn't mean to give them to me.
But you went away,How dare you?I miss you.They say I'll be okay,But I'm not going to ever get over you.
It really sinks in, you know,When I see it in stone
'Cause you went awayHow dare you?I miss you.They say I'll be okay,But I'm not going to ever get over you.

I chose the poem Spring Snow, for how the words spoke to me. Sze's words talked about remebering and moving foward into a new season. His words are similar to how i feel during the beginning of Spring, I forget how much I enjoy it until its finally here. Sze's words are moving and truly do describe Spring to me.

A spring snow coincides with plum blossoms.
In a month, you will forget, then remember
when nine ravens perched in the elm sway in wind.

I will remember when I brake to a stop,
and a hubcap rolls through the intersection.
An angry man grinds pepper onto his salad;

it is how you nail a tin amulet ear
into the lintel. If, in deep emotion, we are
possessed by the idea of possession,

we can never lose to recover what is ours.
Sounds of an abacus are amplified and condensed
to resemble sounds of hail on a tin roof,

but mind opens to the smell of lightening.
Bodies were vaporized to shadows by intense heat;
in memory people outline bodies on walls.
